The TOMS brand name was founded in 2006 by Blake Mycoskie, who was inspired by a trip to Argentina, where he saw the extreme poverty and poor living conditions of the local population. Blake also encountered the fact that both children and adults did not have shoes. He realized that traditional Argentine alpargata shoes could become a revolutionary solution to resolve this problem. He reinvented alpargata for the US market, but with a new idea: he wanted to show how together we can create a better tomorrow for those in need through our compassionate approach today and now. In order to make this idea a reality, Blake vowed that for every purchased pair of shoes children in poor countries would receive a pair of shoes free – the One for One concept. This idea points to a return from consumerism to social compassion and makes TOMS more than just a business brand. Thanks to great support for this idea, TOMS was able to donate one million shoes to needy children in September 2010.
